At Pluckley Church of England Primary School we work to ensure that all children thrive in a Christian centred community in which they are encouraged to enjoy, learn and achieve together. We expect our children to be secure in the knowledge that they are safe and cared for – both by us and by God; able to enjoy their time at school; challenge to achieve their best through a high-quality education; happy in the knowledge they are each celebrated for their individuality as well as their achievements.
Our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum is designed to enable our pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to effectively and positively manage their lives, now and in the future. The skills and attributes learnt and developed through our PSHE lessons help our pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.
At Pluckley Church of England Primary School we utilise the ‘You, Me, PSHE’ scheme which is fully accredited by the PSHE association. This scheme divides PSHE into 7 different strands:

  • Careers, financial capability & economic wellbeing;
  • Drug, alcohol and tobacco education;
  • Identity, society and equality;
  • Keeping safe and managing risk;
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing;
  • Physical health and wellbeing;
  • Sex and relationship education (SRE)

PSHE lessons at Pluckley Church of England Primary school support the young people in our care to become:

  • Resilient and ambitious children who strive for outstanding outcomes, who use their initiative and are unafraid of making mistakes.
    • A DfE evidence review highlighted PSHE’s importance to children’s wellbeing and the associated knock-on effects on academic achievement, stating that: ‘The evidence shows that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education can improve the physical and psychosocial well-being of pupils. A virtuous cycle can be achieved, whereby pupils with better health and well-being can achieve better academically, which in turn leads to greater success’.
    • Our PSHE lessons are designed to be open and honest; an opportunity for pupils to have ideas, share thoughts and take risks in a safe and supportive environment – backed by their teachers and their peers.
  • Successful learners with a thirst for knowledge who are curious and self-motivated to learn and achieve.
    • At Pluckley, our PSHE scheme is designed so that, as the children journey through our school they continually develop and hone their understanding of a range of strands.
    • Our PSHE curriculum is question and discussion based; children are given the opportunity to explore thoughts and ideas and are encouraged to do this – both individually, in small groups and as a whole class.
  • Young people with a strong spiritual foundation who thrive by embodying our REFLECT values in all that they think, say and do.
    • Our REFLECT values form a vital part of our PSHE lesson; giving us the basis for our ground rules. Respect, Cooperation and Trust are key elements of a successful PSHE lesson and, through their time at Pluckley, the children are expected to embody these values by working alongside others and listening to and valuing the thoughts and opinions of others.
  • Well-rounded individuals who have a range of strategies to support positive mental health; enabling them to live fulfilled and happy lives.
    • We firmly believe that, by educating our children in the variety of topics covered in PSHE lessons; relationships, money, personal health, social issues and drug awareness – we are providing our children with vital information to live a healthy life. Awareness of these topics is crucial to providing our children with an understanding of the world we live in and how they can stay safe. The knowledge children gain in our PSHE lessons equips them to make the best choices for themselves.
  • Confident, responsible individuals who have a strong sense of community and strive to make a positive contribution in their future role in the 21st Century and beyond.
    • We strongly believe that studying PSHE helps our children become well-rounded citizens with important knowledge of the wider world that will help prepare them for adult life. By learning and developing their listening and discussion skills as well as their sensitivity towards others, we are helping the children to grow into individuals with the necessary skills to make a positive contribution to those around them as they grow older.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex education is an integral part of the Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum. Governors have agreed a Relationships and Sex Education Policy in line with Kent Guidelines and following advice from TKAT.

RSE throughout school life aims to give children and young people essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships and staying safe both on and offline. It enables pupils to explore their own and others’ attitudes and values and aims to help build their self-esteem and confidence. RSE is taught in Year Two, Year Four and Year Six.
